  “It felt amazing. It was super exciting when I made it past theprequalifying round on Friday, and then placed 2nd in semifinals,” Bernal said.“I was beyond ecstatic. My dreams were coming true.”

  Added Bri’s coach, Suzanne Elliott: “We’revery proud of Bri and her accomplishment. She’s the youngest, only 20 yearsold, out of the 13 years the USA Yoga competition has been held in America.”

  In this competition, the competitors had toperform six different positions for each level.

  Each competitor would have to perform thesix positions in under 3 minutes, and hold each pose for 5 seconds. “There wassomeone with a timer timing us,” Bernal said.

  In the finals, Bernal won with the standinghead to knee, standing bow pulling pose, full standing split, full spine twist,Tiger Lotus, and the crane as her six postures.

  Yoga heals. I originally started practicingyoga due to a back injury. Years of heavy weightlifting with little regard forform led to an L5/S1 disc herniation in 2005.The pain was excruciating, as wasthe emotional toll. I took medication, did some physical therapy, and wentright back to lifting. After re-injuring it in 2007 I heard that yoga wasrestorative, so I decided to try it out. I practiced a vinyasa flow for almosttwo years before attending my first Bikram Yoga class in 2010. It was hard andI didn’t think I was going to make it. After class, however, I feltamazing. Over time, my spine started to heal and my mind started to clear.

Early in my yoga practice, I learned aboutyoga competition and was intrigued. Since then, I have competed in three NewYork State Regional, two Texas Regional, and two National Championships.Perhaps the greatest lesson I have learned through competitive yoga is theability to maintain a mind-body connection in the face of multiplechallenges—judges, spectators, time constraints, etc. Yoga Asana truly becomesthe present moment.
